Summer is in Sight
As we approach the final meeting of the Mountain View Whisman School Board ahead of summer break, we have many topics to discuss. The planning for the next school year has been ongoing, and these last few meetings are where we ensure we close out the work for the end of the school year.
I hold weekly office hours on Fridays, so don't hesitate to book a slot if you'd like to meet! You can also send me an email at my official district address, [email protected] with questions, comments, or feedback.
Board Meeting
The Thursday, May 29, 2025 meeting begins at 4:30 PM with several special recognition items honoring district service, followed by closed session at about 5:15 PM. Here are some items on the agenda when we’ve reconvened the open session:
Curriculum
We’ll kick off the action and discussion portion of the meeting looking at several curriculum topics.
First, we’ll revisit the Health and Wellness Mental Health Continuum. The Board previously discussed this at the May 8 meeting, and staff is now returning for approval of their recommendations for our curriculum, data management tool, and community partnership agreement.
Next, in Mathematics Programming and Adoption Update, we’ll discuss the work the district has been doing this year on our current math program and in preparation for the upcoming new curriculum adoption. Back at the CSBA AEC, in what feels like ages ago, I attended a session entitled Navigating the Instructional Materials Adoptions Process for Math and More. While the state will not have an approved list of materials until around November, the earlier we begin our discussions with stakeholders, the smoother we will make the adoption process.
Finally, we will have an update on Middle School World Languages, which follows from a community member’s presentation to the previous Board. The district looked at our current offerings, surveyed students to determine interest, and has made recommendations for the coming school year.
Budgets and Planning
Next, we will have several planning and budgeting topics to discuss. Budgets reveal priorities, and it’s an important part of how the school district is run, as the budget demonstrates how we execute our strategic plans to further our mission.
Our LCAP Federal Addendum will cover how the district will use federal funds for the 2025-26 school year. This will be followed by the public hearing for our Local Control Accountability Plan.
After those items, we will have public hearing for our 2025-2026 Budget Adoption and a Budget Overview for Parents. These will provide a deep dive into where and how the district plans to spend the money we’ve been entrusted with.
Bylaws for MVW Residences Corporation
For the Board's consideration the Bylaws have been revised to respond to Trustees questions and comments on April 24.
With the MVW Residences Corporation created for our Staff Housing at the Sevens, we’ll be looking to complete the bylaws for the non-profit housing corporation. This will move us further towards our goal of delegating some governance authority to the housing corporation so the Board can spend our bandwidth on our primary mission of educating students.
First Reading of Board Policies
At its May 14, 2025 meeting, the Board Policy Committee reviewed several policies for updates and additions. Among the recommendations are the two policies being discussed for their first reading: BP 5030 - Student Wellness and BP 5141.5 - Mental Health. After discussion in this first reading, these would be brought back for a second reading to adopt the policies.
Upcoming Events
As I’m sure you all know, Thursday, June 5 will be the last day of school and the start of summer break. Additionally, both Graham and Crittenden middle schools will have their eighth grade promotion ceremonies.
After that, our final Board meeting of the school year is planned for June 12. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer!
