Moving Forward

on our superintendent search and staff housing

January looks like it will have been a busy month for us! With our special meeting coming up this Thursday, along with the Board Retreat Study Session and the regularly scheduled meetings, we’ll have met almost every week this month. It’s been great to roll up our sleeves and get to work in the new year.

Thank you to everyone who signed up for my first batch of office hours! It was nice to be able to directly hear questions, concerns, and feedback from members of the public. I’ll continue to have these on Fridays in the morning and afternoon, so don’t hesitate to sign up if you’d like to discuss anything with me one-on-one.

Committee Assignments

First, I mentioned in a previous newsletter that I will be serving on the Health and Wellness and Staff Housing Oversight Committees. I would like to take a little time here to discuss why I wanted to serve on these committees.

Health and Wellness

The wellness council/committee shall advise the district on health-related issues, activities, policies, and programs. At the discretion of the Superintendent or designee, the duties of the council/committee may also include the planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities to promote health within the schools or community.

As many of you may already know, I’m particularly passionate about active transportation, and my primary vehicle is my bicycle. That’s just one part of wellness: “health and wellness” within our schools covers physical, mental, and social wellness for our students and community. One of the many places where schools can have an outsized impact on kids for the rest of their lives is in educating them about healthy living and helping them build lifelong habits. Naturally, in a diverse community like ours, this will look different for every family.

Staff Housing Oversight

The purpose of the Staff Housing Oversight Committee is to “advise on operations and management of [Mountain View Whisman at the Sevens].” Outside of the school district, one of the issues I’m passionate about is the housing crisis. Making sure that we prudently and effectively administer such a large investment is critical to fulfilling the community’s trust. On top of that, we will be providing homes for employees and filling a crucial need in their lives. It’s deeply important that we take that responsibility seriously, which is why I wanted to serve on this committee.

Board Meeting

The meeting on Thursday, January 23 begins at 5:30 PM with closed session until 6:00 PM. The open session only has a few items, but they are important!

Staff Housing - Ground Lease and Option to Purchase

These are two separate items related to the district’s workforce housing at The Sevens. As the project progresses, these are steps along the way for the board to exercise its duty to the public to thoughtfully consider our options.

I’ll discuss these items out of order from how they will be acted upon at the meeting, but together they represent our continued efforts towards offering subsidized housing for employees. The Mountain View Voice has also presented additional coverage of these two upcoming items for more detail.

The District and MVO expect the City of Mountain View (“City”) to issue a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy on or about February 6, 2025, after which time the District can begin leasing units to its employees. MVO and the District now need to enter into a Ground Lease for Lot B upon which the EH Building is located.

In short, completing the Ground Lease paves the way for the District to begin leasing units to employees. We will discuss the terms of the lease that have been updated from the direction given at the August 17, 2023 meeting.

The District is motivated to keep the rental rates for its employee tenants of the EH Building as low as possible. The largest operating expense going forward is the Ground Lease payment to MVO. To reduce its operating expense, the District approached MVO about purchasing the land with the initial goal of reducing that Ground Lease expense. As part of the District’s efforts, District staff has negotiated a purchase option agreement with MVO (“Option Agreement” or “Option”).

As noted above, while the District owns the building that will house employees, it does not own the land beneath it. While there were attempts in the past to build workforce housing on land owned by the District, these did not come to pass. In collaboration with the City, the District was able to secure the subsidized portion of 777 West Middlefield, but it was unable to buy the land at the time. Times change, and staff will be presenting the Board a negotiated purchase option.

Superintendent Search Firm Interviews

The Board of Trustees will listen to a 15-minute presentation from the four selected superintendent search firms, followed by 15 minutes of trustee questions.

As you may recall, we received proposals from four superintendent search firms by the deadline in our RFP. In the last meeting, the Board voted to bring in all four firms for interviews. During this process, we will hear a fifteen minute presentation by each of the three firms that chose to go forward:

  • McPherson & Jacobson, LLC

  • Education Leadership Services

  • Leadership Associates

After each presentation, we have allocated ourselves fifteen minutes for questions from the trustees. Once they have all presented and we are done with questions, we will deliberate the options presented to us with the goal of selecting our preferred firm. After we have a firm, we’re well on our way to selecting our next superintendent!

Upcoming Events

On Saturday, January 25, Hadley’s blood drive is scheduled at the Stevenson Elementary MUR. I’ve been a longtime blood donor, and I saw this drive when I was scheduling my next appointment. When I looked into it, I was really moved by Hadley’s story. I know needles aren’t for everyone, but if you are eligible and willing, please take the time to register and donate. As I’m writing this, there are still some slots available.

Also scheduled for Saturday January 25 at 9:30 AM, there is an event to Beautify the Bike Path: Stevens Creek Trail by the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, Grassroots Ecology, and Friends of the Stevens Creek Trail. Folks will start out in downtown, ride along the Stevens Creek Trail, and clean up litter together at some pre-selected trash hotspots. Note: attendees under age 18 will need a parent or guardian on-site the day of the event to sign an additional waiver from the City of Mountain View.
