Congratulations on a Great Year

and enjoy a well-deserved break

I hope everyone is enjoying the start of summer break! Last week, in addition to the last day of school for my kids, I had the honor of congratulating the eighth graders at both middle schools on their promotion to high school. While the cast on my hand prevented me from shaking hands, I delivered many fist bumps over the course of the day with my left hand, and I felt fortunate to see the excitement in the eyes of the graduating class.

This achievement, like the achievements of all of our students, would not have been possible without the efforts of so many people in our community. Students, families, teachers, staff, and community members all worked so hard this school year to bring it to a successful close, and we have so much to be proud of. Moments like these are a great time to reflect and appreciate each other.

During the break, I will continue to hold weekly office hours on Fridays, so don't hesitate to book a slot if you'd like to meet! You can also send me an email at my official district address, [email protected] with questions, comments, or feedback. With the school year closing and a new one on the horizon, feel free to share this newsletter with any new or returning families in the Mountain View Whisman School District that you think will find it useful.

Board Meeting

The Thursday, June 12, 2025 meeting begins at 4:30 PM with a community presentation, followed by closed session. Along with the community presentation, here are some items on the agenda when we return to open session:

Reusable Dishware Presentation

From time to time, we have proposals and interest from community members on specific topics. Late last year, we had a presentation on World Language Study. This week, we will have Ms. Sapienza and Ms. Chueh discuss reusable dishware in our schools.

Discussing the possibility of migrating to reusable dishware for sustainability and the potential for long-term cost savings offers significant environmental, educational, health, and financial benefits.

I really value that our schools provide meals for all students, as it makes sure each child has sufficient nutrition to learn at school and it reduces stigma by making it universal. It was a change from my childhood, however, to see amount of single-use waste we create when serving these meals. I look forward to hearing about alternatives to the current system and how that could affect our schools.

i-Ready Diagnostic 3 Assessment Report

Staff is presenting an overview of i-Ready Diagnostic 3 results. i-Ready is one of the district's benchmarking tools to measure progress in reading and math.

Now that the school year has come to a close, we will review the third trimester results for one of the ways we assess student performance and progress, i-Ready. While all measurements are imperfect, it’s important that we continue to focus on student achievement with the data points we have available. This allows the board and the district to effectively notice strengths and areas for improvement, and continue to plan for student success.

Health and Wellness Triennial Report

The Health and Wellness Committee, as required by BP 5030 and the Federal Final Rule, conducted a triennial policy review.

As part of our policy on student wellness, staff conducts a triennial policy review with the Health and Wellness Committee. This assesses the implementation and effectiveness of the policy across several dimensions, and then feeds into the recommendations for updates to the policy. As a member of the Health and Wellness Committee, I had the privilege of helping with the recommendations, along with staff and other community members.

Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Update

Staff is bringing the Workplace Violence Prevention Plan for approval. Each year, the district must have an approved plan.

Both a legal obligation and an important part of ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for our workers, we will be performing our annual review of our workplace violence prevention plan. The plan covers items like how the district takes in reports, prohibits retaliation, responds to emergencies, corrects hazards, and more. It’s a critical part of how the district creates and maintains a safe workplace.

Staffing Updates

The Board will receive two staffing updates: Substitutes and Special Education Staffing. Both items will help us understand the progress the district is making towards ensuring that every student receives high-quality teachers and education, and the challenges still facing us. Maintaining the Board’s focus on these issues to provide input and direction to staff will be critical in achieving our education goals.

MVW Residences Corporation Board of Directors

Now that the Board has completed the steps for formation of the nonprofit housing corporation to govern our Staff Housing and approved its bylaws, we will discuss how we want to select and appoint its Board of Directors. This will likely include what we are looking for in Directors, how we would like to evaluate candidates, and how we will ultimately select the Directors.

Board Governance

Finally, we will have two board governance-related items. First, the first reading of a relatively straightforward update to our Board Bylaws. Recommended by the Board Policy Committee at its June 4, 2025 meeting, this removes the deprecated BB 9120 and replaces it with individual bylaws for our specific offices: President, Secretary, and Clerk.

After that, we will discuss the Board Governance Handbook for 2025-2026. The handbook is a shared, living document for the board that documents the board and board members’ vision, roles, and responsibilities. Discussing and reviewing it at the close of the school year will allow us to reflect on our work and how we can work together as a team.

Upcoming Events

With summer break here, I’m sure many of you have full schedules! I’ll list a couple of fun events in case you have extra time.

KidStock is back in the Civic Center Plaza in Downtown Mountain View, with the next event on June 21, 2025 from 10 AM to noon.

The Mountain View Public Library has started their Summer Reading Program, running from June 1 to July 31, 2025. Kids may have already brought home their scratch-off, and it’s open for anyone: adults, teens, and children (including babies). Summer reading is a great way to stave off learning loss during the summer and to help children develop a lifelong love of reading.

From June 9 to July 31, 2025, the district and Santa Clara County are partnering to provide free summer meals for anyone under 18 from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM. No questions, no IDs required.
