Closing out January

We’re about to have our final meeting of January. With meetings on January 11, January 16, January 23, and now January 30, we’ve kept a busy schedule in starting the year. We’ve been working on many important topics for the district, including our workforce housing, policy updates, selecting a superintendent search firm, and developing our working norms as a governance team, to name a few.

We will have no shortage of important work ahead of us, but this has been a strong start to the year.

Two quick reminders to start this newsletter. First, if you've found this to be useful and informative, please share it with other community members who you think might enjoy it as well! Second, I'm continuing my weekly office hours. They're a great way for me to hear directly from you, in addition to other channels like email and public comment.

Board Meeting

The Thursday, January 30th meeting begins at 4:30 PM with closed session until 6:00 PM.

Superintendent Search Process - Discussion and Contract Approval

At the last board meeting, we interviewed the three superintendent search firms: McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, Education Leadership Services, and Leadership Associates. After listening to their presentations and their answers to our questions, we reviewed the individual reference checks that Trustees performed. Finally, we selected Leadership Associates as our preferred firm.

In this week’s meeting, the Board will discuss our preferences for how we want to conduct the superintendent search. The following topics will be covered:

1. Overview of the search process

2. Timeline for the search

3. Board / search firm protocols during the search

4. Discussion of online survey

5. Board recommendation regarding community and staff groups to participate in input sessions with Leadership Associates Consultants

6. Board input regarding desired qualities and characteristics of the new Superintendent

After the discussion, we will also review the contract with Leadership Associates for their services.

Out of Town Travel and Conference/Workshop Policy

The proposed Travel and Conference/Workshop Policy has been developed to establish clear, guidelines for district employees conducting authorized travel on behalf of the district.

At their most recent meeting, the Budget Advisory Committee reviewed staff’s proposed policy for travel and expense reimbursement and made the recommendation of the draft that the Board will be reviewing. In preparation, they reviewed travel needs and historical context, made comments and suggestions for the working draft, and then aligned on the current draft.

They based their recommendation due to their assessment of its alignment with district goals, transparency and accountability, and cost efficiency. In those areas, and in the details of the policy, the committee recommends its approval. Now, it comes to the Board for review, deliberation, and action.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) One-Time Payment

The District appreciates all that staff members do to support students and the community. The District would like to provide support for the financial futures of staff members by offering a one time payment of $1000 (prorated based on the employees FTE) that eligible staff may use toward financial planning for one’s future.

This is proposed in appreciation of our staff members and in recognition of how retirement benefits have been reduced over time. The MOU would encourage staff members to use this money to plan for their retirement, with suggestions of adding to their 403(b) plan or paying down student loans, among others.

Board Policy Review Committee

At its January 16 Board meeting the Board requested that staff prepare an agenda item so the Board could consider naming two board members to aid staff in the review and creation of Board Policies through a Board Policy Review Committee.

As I’ve noted before, setting policy for the district is one of the main responsibilities of the board. We recently approved updates to some of our board policies, and in this meeting we have the remaining three policies from that batch as part of the consent calendar.

During the previous discussion, the Board requested that staff bring back an item about the formation of a policy committee. Policy committees are used in other districts to work with staff and stakeholders in crafting and updating board policies. There are different ways to constitute and structure the committee, which is what we will be discussing during this item.

Upcoming Events

This is the second reminder that student enrollment for the 2025 - 2026 school year has started! It will run until February 7, 2025. While the information nights have all passed, there are still a few registration help nights this week.

If you have students in the district, one of the parents in the household has likely received an email containing an LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan) survey. As we are updating our LCAP, the survey responses are a key way that the district learns about the priorities and interests in the community. Please complete this survey by February 14, 2025 to make your voice heard!

The City of Mountain View will be celebrating Lunar New Year on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Community Center!
