A Super Week Ahead
With three meetings over seven days, we’ve got a packed schedule this week on the Mountain View Whisman School Board.
Following the schedule from earlier, on Saturday, March 15, we reviewed superintendent applications and discussed candidates to be interviewed. During the Closed Session of our upcoming Saturday, March 22 Special Meeting, we will conduct our interviews and select our finalists.
While selecting our next superintendent is a critical part of the future of the district, and demands careful consideration, we still have important business to conduct at our Thursday Regular Meeting.
Before I get into that, don't forget to sign up for my weekly office hours on Fridays if you'd like to meet! You can also send me an email at my official district address, [email protected], with feedback, questions, or comments.
Board Meeting
The Thursday, March 20 meeting begins at 4:30 PM with closed session until 6:30 PM. Here are some items on the agenda:
Literacy Update
Staff will provide an update on the Literacy program in MVWSD.
Teachers and staff continue to do amazing work educating the children in the district. We’ll begin the Action and Discussion section of the meeting reviewing an update on our Literacy program, including next steps and future considerations.
Canopy Partnership at Bubb Update
At the November 7, 2024 board meeting, the District approved a $20,000 contract with Canopy to support tree planting efforts in preparation for the Outdoor Learning Project at Bubb Elementary. Since then, the District, Canopy, and the City have collaborated closely, gathering community feedback and refining plans to ensure the success of this initiative. Notably, the City has joined as a partner, providing input and adjusting irrigation systems to support the newly planted trees. Tonight staff and Canopy will present the the proposed plan for planting.
I wanted to highlight this because it's an improvement to one of our campuses, and it highlights a great collaboration between the District, the City, and Canopy to deliver real improvements. This reinforces our shared commitment to making our schools the best they can be for our students and community.
Staff Housing Update
Housing Consultant Peter Ingram will provide an update to Trustees
There has been much community interest in the Staff Housing project, and as a member of the Staff Housing Oversight Committee, I'm quite engaged on this topic.
He was introduced at the last regular board meeting, but for people who missed it I'd like to quickly introduce Peter Ingram. Mr. Ingram is an experienced community development and project management consultant who will be using his expertise to provide us with advisory services, coordination, and project management on the Staff Housing project. Interim Superintendent Baier gave a more detailed introduction in his recent Supt eNews that covers more of Mr. Ingram’s background.
His presentation highlights some important details about the current status of the project, and I believe it will be informative to the general public and the Board about where we are and what's coming up.
Following this item, we will continue the discussions of possible funding options for purchasing the land. It's important to note here that we have not yet decided to exercise the option. These meetings and items are part of us performing reasoned deliberation in order to be able to prudently execute should we choose to go ahead with the purchase in the future.
Board Bylaws and Board Policies Updates (First Reading)
The Policy Committee, at its March 5, 2025, meeting, reviewed the policies and is bringing them for First Reading and Trustees' review.
Approval of the policies will take place at the next regular meeting.
As noted in the item description, this represents some of the first outputs from the Board Policy Committee, where Trustee Henry and I reviewed the latest batch of CSBA policy updates, along with some new policies. In general, the committee will work with staff to make recommendations to the full board. At the regular board meetings, we anticipate a first reading, followed by acting on the policy updates in a subsequent meeting to allow for deliberation and full consideration.
Some policy updates will be simple technical changes due to changing state law or judicial decisions, others will have more involved decisions to be made to reflect the specifics of our district and community. Further, in considering an update, the committee may note related policies that are either missing or in need of an update.
The committee has met once, and I'm certain we will refine and improve the process as we gather experience and feedback from the full Board, staff, and stakeholders. However, I'm quite encouraged by this improvement to our processes.
